History

In 2009 the Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology & Underwater Cultural Heritage was established as a European Union project under the EU-Tempus III Programme. The project aimed to create a specialized centre for postgraduate studies which provides education and training at different levels in aspects of maritime and underwater archaeology, and to develop a postgraduate Diploma and Master programmes in Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage, designed and structured in accordance with EU standards.

The EU Tempus programme supports the modernization of higher education, mainly through university cooperation projects, therefore, the centre was created through collaboration between eight consortium institutions from the EU and Egypt who among them provided the necessary academic, technical and administrative expertise required for the establishment of the centre

Vision:

Scientific research have revealed recently in the field of underwater archeology and archaeological research for the energies and the unique potential of Egypt in the field of archaeological research, scientific, in response to this, was created Alexandria Center for Marine Archaeology and sunken maritime heritage to add for the first time the education and training in the field of Maritime Archaeology to the curricula of Egyptian higher education, and this center is the first of its kind in that area in Egypt and the Arab world.

Message:

1- Establishment of a specialized center at Alexandria University based on education and multi-level training programs in the areas of Marine Archaeology and underwater cultural heritage.

2- Preparation and implementation of an educational program to grant a special diploma and Master degree in marine archeology and underwater cultural heritage, in accordance with the standards of the European Union.

Objectives:

The center offers postgraduate diploma and master in arts in marine archeology and underwater maritime heritage, which is designed according to the standards of the European Union.

Scientific programs in the centre aim to provide graduates with different scientific backgrounds with a sense of scientific and methodological basis in the management and interpretation private sources of marine archaeology in its wider sense, therefore, participants in the educational programs at the Centre will provide them with the basics that enable them to professionalism in this field, or well established basis of the future of scientific research.

Services:

The Centre is currently teaching two classes for Diploma and Master's degree in Marine Archaeology and sunken, as it also hold a variety of training courses in this discipline to promote awareness among the archaeological specialists and non-specialists alike.
 
Activities:

The Centre is currently holding training courses in the field of diving for university students in general and in accordance with the system of the International Union for diving.

The basic beneficiary categories of the establishment of the center are the Egyptian, Arab and foreign students studying for archeology and related sciences, and who wish to specialize on research-level or professional in the field of marine and underwater archaeology. Also, the workers in the field of archeology and other related areas, as trustees and museums inspectors and tour guides, will find in the programs of study and training provided by the Center an opportunity to develop their abilities and their professional skills. Finally, the various activities of the Centre will contribute in raising awareness of cultural and sunken archaeological heritage of Egypt.

Structure and Duration of the Programmes


The educational programs offered by the centre are designed both to meet the needs of students who have a four-year degree in archaeology or related disciplines (history, anthropology, museology, etc.) who wish to specialise in maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage, as well as those who come from a different academic background (geography, oceanography, engineering etc.) and wish to expand their scope of knowledge and skills. Therefore, the centre offers a Graduate Diploma as well as a Master Degree programme in maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage. Upon successful completion of the programmes, the degrees are awarded by the Alexandria University.


Graduate Diploma in Maritime Archaeology & Underwater Cultural Heritage:

This programme aims to provide graduates from any background with a basic understanding of contemporary theory and practice in aspects of maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage and its role in the wider context of cultures. The duration for this program would be one year full-time (two semesters) during which students will take six taught courses, four of which are compulsory core courses covering the basic theory and methodology of maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage, in addition to two elective courses.


Master Degree in Maritime Archaeology & Underwater Cultural Heritage:

This program aims to provide graduates in archaeology or related disciplines, with a sound theoretical and methodological grounding in the investigation, interpretation and management of maritime and underwater archaeological resources. Hence it would provide the basis for a professional career in this field or a sound foundation for further research. Its duration would be two years full-time (four semesters) during which students will take eight taught courses, five of which are compulsory core courses in addition to three elective ones. Additionally, students will be expected to produce a thesis by the end of the fourth semester.


Practical Training:

Many of the Diploma and MA courses have inbuilt practical modules in which specific skills are introduced. The practical modules include: Underwater Photography, Boat Recording, Survey & Excavation Techniques, Finds Illustration and Field Conservation.

Moreover, a number of visits to museums and archaeological sites are undertaken as part of the education programmes.

The centre’s collaborative links with the Egyptian Supreme Council for Antiquities together with the archaeological missions operating in Egypt enables students to be trained on current maritime archaeological projects taking place in Egypt.


Core courses:

Archaeology Underwater : Provides a platform for exploring a wide range of themes relating to the study of the maritime past.

Heritage Management in the Coastal Zone : Deals with the logistical, technical and methodological issues related to the practice of archaeology in underwater environments.

Maritime Archaeology : Investigates fundamental issues of assessment, monitoring, conservation and public presentation of maritime archaeological material.

Research Skills : Aims to teach and enhance the skills necessary for independent research at

postgraduate level as well as computing skills, writing and publication in a variety of forms.

Elective courses include:

Ancient Boats and Ships : Aims to examine the watercrafts of the ancient world, operating environments, methods of propulsion and steering and the materials and tools used in their construction.

Ancient Seafaring : Provides an appreciation of aspects of harbour and shipwreck archaeology and maritime conditions, within the context of seafaring in the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Conservation of Waterlogged Finds : Provides an appreciation of the problems associated with waterlogged materials and the care and treatment of artefacts recovered from marine sites.

Marine Environment : Looks at the different coastal processes which determine the formation and preservation of archaeological sites in marine, riverine and lacustrine environments.

Maritime Archaeology in Egypt : Give an overview of the development of maritime and underwater archaeology in Egypt and the main projects that were carried out in that field.
